A TROUBLED pub, where police found evidence of drug dealing and a man was stabbed outside, has been put up for sale.

The Montpelier Inn was ordered to shut for three months by Brighton and Hove City Council following the incident in Montpelier Place, Brighton on November 4.

The freeholder, Ei, formerly Enterprise Inns, now part of the Stonegate Pub Company, has now put the property’s freehold on the market for offers in excess of £900,000.

Commercial property agent Sibbett Gregory described the Grade II listed building as “attractive and imposing” with a “ground floor trading area with basement below and two upper floors currently in residential use”.

Previously, The Argus reported on how council licensing officials raised concerns about The Montpelier Inn.

In December, police told a council meeting that while they were investigating the stabbing, large bulk quantities of class A drugs were found on the premises.

Barrister for Sussex Police, Peter Savill, told a virtual council licensing panel that “deal bags” were found in the drip trays.

There were also “deal lists,” scales and other drugs paraphernalia discovered there.

During a five-hour meeting, the council “seriously considered revocation of the licence”.

The council panel said there had been a “complete failure of management” and said “local residents have experienced serious public nuisance and crime and disorder emanating from the premises”.

However, a compromise was reached following a change of management and the pub will be allowed to open again under a new name.

The council previously heard from concerned neighbours who wanted the pub closed for good and turned into flats following the violent scenes just before the last lockdown.

A 40-year-old man suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the Royal Sussex County Hospital for treatment following a mass brawl.

Sussex Police said that he remained in hospital with serious injuries and that six people had since been arrested as investigations continued.

Six men were arrested and held on suspicion of attempted murder, including four 18-year-olds, a 19-year-old, and a 57-year-old, all from Brighton and Hove.

They were released under investigation, pending further enquiries.
