A PERSON has died after being hit by a train.

Travellers were asked to delay their journeys after the incident between Gatwick Airport and Three Bridges yesterday afternoon.

Reduced services were in place on the Brighton main line and trains between the city, Horsham, Three Bridges and Gatwick Airport were subject to delays and cancellations.

At 5.36pm, a Southern Rail spokesman said: “It is with great sadness that we report a person has been hit by a train between Gatwick Airport and Three Bridges.

“All lines are blocked between these stations whilst the emergency services work to deal with this incident.

“If you are on a train currently, please remain on-board until you hear further information from the driver.

“We will work to move trains into stations as quickly as possible.”

Travellers were warned that journeys on the trains could take up to an hour longer.

Yesterday afternoon's statement added: “Services between Brighton, Horsham, Three Bridges and Gatwick Airport will be subject to delays and cancellations.

“We've requested rail replacement buses and as soon as these are confirmed or we have more information, we will update you.

“We would strongly advise to delay travel where possible & only travel unless it is necessary this evening.

“A reduced services is in place between London Victoria and Brighton/Littlehampton.

“Trains that usually run between London Victoria & Eastbourne will also be disrupted.

“Thank you for your patience at this time.”
