POLICE were called in the early hours to shut down a large lockdown party on a university campus.

More than 100 revellers amassed for the gathering at a hall of residence on the University of Sussex's Falmer campus on Saturday night, it has been reported.

Celebrations continued into the following morning, with officers from Sussex Police called to disperse those guilty of breaching coronavirus restrictions.

Three people were issued with £200 fines.

The latest lockdown rules state "it is against the law to meet socially with family or friends unless they are part of your household or support bubble".

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: "Police were called to a large gathering of students at University of Sussex accommodation at 2.25am on Sunday.

"Officers attended and the group were swiftly dispersed back to their respective blocks."

The force urged people to sitck to the restrictions and warned it would take action "where there are blatant breaches".

A University of Sussex spokesman told The Argus that "the vast majority of students who are living on our campus are following the lockdown rules" and officials have been reminding them since September that visitors are not allowed at their halls of residence.

"The safety of our students, our staff and our community is imperative," he said.

“Sussex Police and the university have made it clear that gathering in university residences, with people who are not in household bubbles, is absolutely forbidden.

“The university will also be taking all necessary action in relation to these recent unacceptable disruptions.”
