POLICE are appealing for information after a serious collision in which a driver had to be taken to hospital.
Officers were called to Bath Street in Brighton earlier today after reports of a crash.
Howard Place and Bath Street remained closed this evening following the collision between a red Fiat Punto and a black Ford KA, in which the KA driver had to be treated for head injuries.
Sussex Police said: "At 1.40pm police were called to a collision between two cars in Bath Street, Brighton.
"These were a red Fiat Punto and a black Ford KA. The 26-year-old man driving the KA was taken to the Royal Sussex County hospital to be treated for head injuries which are not assessed as life threatening.
"The Fiat Punto did not stop at the scene and enquiries are continuing to trace it and the man seen driving it.
"An investigation is underway to assess the circumstances of the collision.
"Anyone with information can contact police online or by calling 101, quoting serial number 515 of 10/01."
Photos from the scene this evening show a van also being loaded onto a recovery lorry and the black Ford KA with its front destroyed, while a passer-by described "debris scattered across the road".
The witness said: "I was walking along Howard Place, away from Brighton Station, and noticed the flashing lights as soon as I came round the corner.
“There was police tape blocking the road and three cars were trying to turn round as I got there.
“A recovery lorry had a van loaded on to the back of it, and next to it there was a small Ford hatchback which looked like it had been involved in a really serious crash.
“The bumper had been destroyed and there were loads of bits of debris all over the road.
“As I was leaving, at about 6.20pm, the recovery lorry was moving with the van loaded on to the back.
“There were still plenty of police on the scene, with two police cars blocking the entrance to the road.”
