13 pictures show Sussex town with highest coronavirus rate

The town has recorded the highest weekly Covid-19 rate in Sussex over the last two days after sharp rise in the number of cases reported in the area over the last week.

Wednesday's figures showed there were 1,158 coronavirus cases reported in the Crawley district in the week leading up to January 2 giving it a weekly rate of 1,030.2 new cases per 100,000 population.

This was up from a rate of 541.8 the week before, taking it above the most recent data for Hastings (867.7) and Rother (697.3).

These two areas have, over the last few weeks, had the highest weekly Covid-19 rates in Sussex, causing them to join the likes of London and Kent as the first areas placed in Tier 4 just before Christmas.

Data for the most recent four days (January 3-6) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 309 (98 per cent) have seen a rise in case rates and six (2 per cent) have seen a fall.

Crawley now has the 31st highest weekly Covid-19 rate out of all local authority areas in England.
