A WARNING has been issued after reports of a "pollution incident" in the sea off a popular beach.
The Environment Agency and Southern Water have launched investigations into the incident in the water by the King Alfred Leisure Centre in Hove.
People are being advised to stay out of the water as a result of the situation.
Brighton and Hove Beach Seafront Team issued a "water quality warning" at about 1pm.
A spokesman said: "We have had reports of a pollution incident in the sea by the King Alfred Leisure Centre.
"We have been in contact with Southern Water and the Environment Agency who are now investigating.
"Until further notice we are advising people not to enter the water."
The Argus contacted Southern Water for comment.
A spokesman said: "We’ve received a report of a discharging surface water outfall close to King Alfred.
"This is not a release of wastewater. This drain has a large catchment and heavy rain can push large amounts of run off and debris.
"We continue to investigate and work with Brighton and Hove Council."
The Environment Agency have been contacted for comment.
