A FAMILY-run restaurant is hoping for success after entering a national industry competition.
Bursa Kebab in High Street, Newhaven, has been nominated for a 2021 British Kebab Award.
Mark Bursa, the restaurant’s owner, has been busy rallying support to ensure his business makes the final shortlist.
He said: “We are overwhelmed and we are grateful for all the support we have so far.
“We have the backing of the local community and we are privileged to have their support.
“Our MP, Maria Caulfield, has voted for us which means a lot to us.
“The more votes we get in, the better chance we have of succeeding.”
The annual event, now in its ninth year, celebrates restaurants and takeaways that offer everything from fine dining to value meals.
Thousands of people across the UK nominate their favourites, which are then narrowed down to a shortlist of 150, based on public votes, hygiene ratings, online reviews and social media support.
Finalists are judged by a panel including MPs and food and drink industry representatives.
Mark said that receiving such a prestigious award would be a just reward for his staff and family who have kept the business running for almost 20 years.
He said: “For us personally it would be a really big achievement. It would give us recognition for the work that we have been doing for all these years.

“I would be very privileged to even be nominated so to win, it would mean so much I can’t even explain.”
The British Kebab Awards is hoping it will still be able to present the honours at a grand ceremony next year, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, no date has been confirmed.
Despite having to operate under Covid-19 restrictions, Mark his optimistic that his loyal customers will continue to show their support for his business.
He said: “We love our community, it’s very small but when the tough times hit everyone comes together and unites as one and it makes you proud.
“We don’t get to see our regular faces and we have to do non-contact deliveries so it’s more of a drop-off.
“It means we’ve had to adapt and make sure we keep our distance from our colleagues and customers.
“A lot has had to change, but hopefully it won’t be for much longer.”
