A COUNCIL has urged people from Tier 4 areas to stay away as it tries to keep its district in Tier 2.
Chichester District Council issued the warning to those thinking about travelling to the city from nearby Portsmouth, Gosport and Havant.
These areas were all escalated to the highest coronavirus alert level, Tier 4, over the weekend following a concerning rise in their coronavirus infection rates.
The Chichester district, meanwhile, remains in Tier 2.
This means that, unlike in Tier 4, people are able to form a "Christmas bubble" with two other households to celebrate on December 25.
A Chichester District Council spokesman said: "Under normal circumstances, we love to welcome people to our beautiful district.
"However, we would kindly ask that if you live in a Tier 4 area that you follow the government’s guidance and do not travel into our area.
"This applies to those who plan on doing some last minute shopping, or those who may have second homes in our area.
"It’s vital that we all follow the government’s rules if we are to reduce infection levels.
"It’s also important to be aware that the government is advising us all to stay local wherever possible – regardless of the tier we are in.
"We look forward to welcoming you back as soon as we possibly can. Please take care and keep safe."
