POLICE have identified a body found on a beach as that of a man who had been missing for more than a week.

The body of Gerald Thompson was found on the beach off George V Avenue in Worthing last Thursday morning.

Sussex Police issued an appeal for help in finding Mr Thompson on December 7 after he did not return to his home the night before.

He was last seen leaving his home at about 10pm.

Sussex Search and Rescue Teams were called to assist the force in their attempts to locate the 67-year-old and a search operation was launched across the Worthing area.

On Thursday morning, a body was found on Worthing beach, and today Sussex Police confirmed the identity.

A force spokesman said: "A body found on the beach off George V Avenue in Worthing on Thursday morning has sadly been identified as that of missing man Gerald Thompson.

"Gerald, 67, had been reported missing from his home in Broadwater, Worthing, on Monday, December 7, having last been seen at about 10pm the evening before."
