A MYSTERY ordnance discovered on a beach that was found to be “highly explosive” has been destroyed by experts.
Multiple pieces of the explosive ordnance were found on Medmerry beach following a search by Selsey Coastguard on Sunday.
Photos taken by the team were sent to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team who blew up the object, destroying it.
The beach was reopened to the public following the controlled explosion.
A Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team spokesman gave advice on any such discoveries.
He said: “Ordnance comes in all shapes and sizes, if you come across any ordnance or something you’re not sure about on the beach call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
“The ordnance found on this beach has been found to be highly explosive so if you come across anything please do not touch it and call the Coastguard straight away.
“The coast and the sea can catch you out whether you’re local or not. Our message remains: call 999 Coastguard if you’re in trouble. Please help us and our families stay safe. Be aware of the risks, keep your distance.”
It comes just months after a bomb squad was called to an old metal bar in Worthing.
Fears were sparked when the item was dug up near Worthing Pier.
The army’s specialist team worked near the pier to ensure it was safe.
