A PHOTOGRAPHER has released a new book filled with images from his journey along the Sussex coast.
JJ Waller is known for his work depicting scenes in Brighton, but for his latest photo series, the artist has travelled further afield to capture images from across Sussex.
His new book, Sussex By The Sea, is a series of imagined postcards from familiar and not so familiar locations that you are unlikely to see in seafront souvenir shops.
He said: “Although this book does concentrate on one county, it doesn’t concentrate on one place, it has a wider coverage.
“I started it just prior to the first lockdown and then a couple of days into it the lockdown began.
“It was great fun, because whether I travelled by train, bike, walking or by car, every day I went somewhere and made great discoveries and had such a great time getting to know the county where I live in a way that I’d never done before.”
JJ travelled to towns and landmarks across Sussex, including Eastbourne, Newhaven, Seven Sisters and Beachy Head.
He said that during the course of the project he discovered the beauty that exists right on his doorstep.
He said: “Although I had seen little bits and pieces and visited various places over the years, I’d never really travelled that much.
“I realised that these places are visited by people from across the world in a way that I’d never really knew.
“I didn’t know how well known places like the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head were and that was what really impressed me besides the actual places themselves – the vast number of people who come from all over the world to visit and enjoy it, even more so in some ways than a sunny day in Brighton which is full of people from all over the world.
“There are beaches there that, if you make the effort to get to them and the tide’s out of course, they are amazing as any beaches I’ve been to anywhere in the world in terms of the drama and the sands.”
