RESIDENTS in Brighton and Hove are finding it impossible to get tested for coronavirus.

All options – including home test kits, walk-in centres and drive-throughs – are no longer available on the government website.

A woman in her 20s, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “This morning I woke up and I couldn’t taste anything, even when I put lemon on my tongue.

“I went online to get tested, but I was shocked to find that it is impossible.

“There’s no option to get the test delivered, no option to use a walk-in centre and no option to use a drive-through.

“Private testing at Bupa in Hove is also showing ‘no availability’.

“This is nuts, there are literally no tests anywhere – what is going on?”

When contacted, the Department for Health and Social Care said a “small number of sites” are being relocated.

It said that “at least two” additional regional testing sites may be arriving in the coming weeks, which will each “be able to test hundreds of people a day”.

Sussex’s largest coronavirus testing centre at the Amex Stadium, which had the capacity to conduct 1,000 tests per day, was closed in August.

A Department for Health and Social Care spokesman said: “We are seeing a significant demand for tests but if you have symptoms we urge you to get tested.

“New booking slots and homes testing kits are made available daily and you can help protect yourself if you wash your hands, cover your face and make space.”

This comes after the government announced new limitations on gatherings amid a growing swell in positive coronavirus tests across the UK.

Peter Kyle, MP for Hove and Portslade, described the lack of testing as “dangerous”.

He said: “People’s experience of testing has never matched the promises made by government.

“It’s clear that most people in Sussex cannot get a test locally right now as schools and universities return.

“As we move further into autumn, this is nothing short of dangerous.”
