A MAN has appeared in court accused of attempted murder by driving a car at another man in a residential street.

Police were called to Cants Lane in Burgess Hill on August 24

There were reports of an argument between two men over accusations of aggressive driving.

The men were in a brief altercation before walking away from each other.

But Arthur McGhie is accused of then returning to his vehicle, driving on the wrong side of the road, before mounting the pavement to run over the victim.

Video footage shared on social media showed a man being flipped over into the air and into a hedge.

After the man was run over, the suspect is alleged to have further assaulted the man in the hedge by punching him.

Police charged McGhie with attempted murder.

The bald 54-year-old appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court where it was also revealed that he was charged with dangerous driving, assaulting an off-duty police officer occasioning her actual bodily harm, and assaulting an emergency worker.

It was also revealed that the victim was Stephen Smith, aged in his 40s, who was taken to hospital with cuts and bruises.

Police confirmed that Mr Smith has left hospital today.

McGhie, of Cants Lane, Burgess Hill, appeared by video link in court and wore a grey jumper.

He grew up in Scotland but works for car mechanic firm Westbourne Motors in the town.

He spoke to confirm his name, his address, and his date of birth.

Robert Beighton, defending, represented McGhie in court, while Martina Sherlock appeared for the prosecution.

No pleas to the charges were entered.

District Judge Tessa Szagun read out the charges and a summary of the facts in the case.

She said the charges were so serious that the case would have to be sent to the crown court.

McGhie was remanded in custody and will next appear in court on Friday.
