PROTESTERS clad in orange prison jump suits took to the streets to raise awareness of human rights issues.

Amnesty International campaigners went to Lewes to raise awareness of 40 terror suspects who are jailed by the United States at a base called Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

The men have been in detention for years without a trial or without being formally charged with a crime.

It was set up under President George W Bush as part of the “War on Terror” in the wake of the bombing of the World Trade Center in 2001.

The Argus:

Lewes has a link to the United States because revolutionary Tom Paine authored The Rights of Man which set out principles under the rule of law. Guantanamo Bay has been condemned by the United Nations.

The Argus:

The Argus previously reported on the case of Omar Deghayes from Saltdean who was arrested in Pakistan in 2002. He was held captive until his release in 2007.
