NEW food hygiene ratings for cafes and restaurants across Brighton and Hove have been published by the Food Standards Agency.
Two food outlets in the city have been listed since April 2 as having a “one” rating – the second lowest rating possible. That means “major improvement in food hygiene is needed”.
Premises across the city are rated by the Food Standards Agency, based on the findings of local authority inspectors, who work all year round.
The hygiene standards found at the time of inspection are then rated on a scale.
Five is top of the scale, meaning the hygiene standards are very good and fully comply with the law.
Zero is at the bottom of the scale, meaning urgent improvement is necessary.
Ratings are correct at the date of publication but premises may be subject to re-inspection and re-rating, therefore check on the Food Standards Agency website for up-to-date information.
North Street Pizzeria, in North Street, Brighton, was given a “one” rating by inspectors visiting on March 7.
It was told the cleanliness and condition of its facilities and building were “generally satisfactory”.
This includes including having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control to enable good food hygiene.
However it was told that improvement was necessary in its hygienic handling of food, which includes preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage.
It was also told that major improvement was needed in its management of food safety, which includes system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety and that the food safety officer has confidence standards will be maintained in future.
Lumberjacks Guilt Free Fast Food, in Clarendon Place, Portslade, was also given a “one” rating after being visited on March 13.
It was told that its hygienic food handling was good, but improvement was necessary in the cleanliness and condition of its facilities and building and major improvement was necessary in its management of food safety.
The main drive of the city council’s food safety team is public protection and public health.
Team leader Nick Wilmot said food hygiene across the city has improved since the team has been in action.
Talking about why making the ratings public was necessary, he said they were “another tool we use to improve standards within business”.
Mr Wilmot said if there was any serious risk to the public then the business would be closed down.
The frequency of food safety inspections varies from every six months to three years. For a full list of all food hygiene ratings given since April 2, visit www.theargus.co.uk.
