SINGING barber Peter Joannou has not done a haircut in three weeks.
He may be out of work, but he is spending his time in lockdown the only way he knows how.
The 51-year-old crooner, known as Brighton’s singing barber, has been belting out show tunes and spreading cheer amid the crisis.
He usually serenades shoppers from the window of his salon in The Lanes.
But after it was forced to close last month, he has gone digital.
Wearing a suit and clutching his microphone, Peter now live-streams shows to an online audience from his home in Cuckfield.
He said: “I’ve been singing from my shop window for more than six years now.
“Last month, when the lockdown was approaching, I decided to start doing it with my window closed, and now I’m doing special request shows live from my living room.
“My business has been knocked down along with everyone else’s.
“I haven’t done a haircut in three weeks.
“Now, I’m waiting for a Government grant to keep the place ticking over. The staff have been furloughed and I’m sitting tight, thinking of things to do to make the most of the situation.
“While I was sitting at home I thought it would be nice to carry on and sing a few of my favourite songs.”
Hundreds of people have tuned in on Facebook and Youtube to listen.
Peter’s most avid fans are his parents in Cyprus, who have been treated to private Facetime gigs.
Other relatives are watching from Greece and South Africa.
Peter said: “I’ve had such a positive response and it’s really bringing everyone together.
“My fans have been requesting songs and commenting nice things.
“There’s a real sense of community and camaraderie.
“If you’ve been at home all week by yourself, it’s nice to interact with people.”
Peter started performing from his shop in Middle Street soon after he opened it in 2012 “to make others happy”.
Now, in lockdown, he finds it useful as “a way to switch off your mind and immerse yourself in song”.
He said: “It makes me feel happy and makes people smile.
“I do lots of classics from American songbook.
“My favourite tune at the moment is My Way. It’s a bit of a cliche but it’s a great song. The words mean a lot. I often change it to ‘We do it our way’. We’ll all pull though in the end.”
