APPLAUSE could be heard last night as residents joined in with a national display of appreciation for healthcare workers.
Household members across Brighton and Hove gathered at their windows, on balconies and front door steps at 8pm to clap and cheer on the nurses, doctors and carers for all their hard work amid the coronavirus crisis.
There was a great show of support for the Clap for Our Carers campaign in the city, with residents from Preston Park to Brighton Marina shouting cheers and whistling into the night.
In King’s Esplanade in Hove, people banged pots in celebration.
The Clap for Our Carers campaign was circulated widely on social media over the past week and was backed by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas, among many others.
London resident Annemarie Plas started the campaign to give thanks to all carers in the UK, and took inspiration from previous campaigns which had taken place in Spain, France and her home country of the Netherlands.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said yesterday that it was “very moving” to witness the display of support for the health service, and thanked all public sector workers for their efforts to carry on serving the country during the crisis.
