A MAJOR search was launched with coastguard crews and a helicopter called in to assist.
Emergency services were tasked with finding a missing surfer at Rock-a-Nore in Hastings.
The search was launched after he was seen to lose his surfboard by a patrolling coastguard team.
The coastguard helicopter was seen hovering over the stormy sea with the side-door open and two occupants appearing to be looking out.
Fire and lifeboat crews joined the coastguard at the scene.
The search began at about midday and the surfer has now been found.
A Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: "HM Coastguard has been coordinating the search off Hastings for a missing surfer this afternoon.
"The man has just been located in Rye Bay.
"The surfer was seen to lose his surf board by a coastguard team who were out on patrol this afternoon.
"The coastguard helicopter, Hastings RNLI Lifeboat, Bexhill Coastguard Rescue Team and Ryde Bay Coastguard Rescue Team carried out the search for him."
Rye Bay is about six miles away from Rock-a-Nore.
