A RENTERS’ union stormed into a letting agents... and played Monopoly.
Members from Acorn Brighton entered Property Plus in Church Road, Hove, to demand a Section 21 notice – an order to leave a building – be revoked.
The independent agents has accused the union of being “playground bullies”.
But the union says it is defending its members from “no fault evictions”.
Acorn, which has branches across the UK, livestreamed its members entering the agents on Tuesday.
The clip captures the moment the two sides clashed and there was a fiery verbal confrontation.
The union claimed the Section 21 order was contributing to the homeless crisis and demanded it was rescinded.
But the letting agent refused as it had been ordered by a landlord “who wanted his property back”.
After the initial clash, Property Plus appeared to get on with work while the union members played Monopoly on a desk.
Speaking to the The Argus, the lettings agent said the order had been given following complaints from people in the building.
It said it had offered to find the council tenant alternative accommodation.
A spokeswoman for Property Plus, which has been in the city for six years, said: “We are really, really hurt. Devastated really.
“We gave [the tenant] as much notice as possible and even offered to help find him accommodation.
“They came in together and started filming, it reminds me of school – playground bullies who go around in gangs.
“We have been here for many, many years and we do our job correctly and this is the first time we have had a confrontation like this.”
An Acorn spokesman said: “Our member is facing a no fault eviction which will mean that he will lose his home.
“As a union we are committed to defending our members when they are served with no fault eviction notices and have campaigned for Section 21 to be abolished.
“Our actions are a measured response to Property Plus who are evicting somebody from their home.
“During our visit we played a short game of Monopoly whilst waiting for them to resolve the issue.
“We thought it would be funny to play a game which involves buying properties and exploiting renters whilst in a lettings agents.”
