FOOTBALL supporters have been called out for booing their own player.
Albion fans jeered as Gaetan Bong was substituted during Albion’s FA cup clash with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
The game’s kick-off was delayed by 60 seconds as part of the Football Association’s Take A Minute campaign, which looks to encourage people to think about mental health.
Many supporters have condemned fellow fans for their actions in booing Bong when he was withdrawn in the 71st minute saying the affects on the player could be harmful.
In a statement on social media, one supporter said: “Yes, it is a shame we are out, but I am more disappointed by the reaction of some of my fellow Albion fans when Bong was taken off.
“It is never acceptable to laugh and cheer when one of our own players go off.”
He added that the player “does not deserve to be treated the way he gets treated”.
He said: “To those of you who laughed and cheered when he went off - how do you think it makes him feel?
“This is a person just trying to do their job. Today was about looking after our mental health - so how good do you think it could be for Bong’s mental health to hear his own fans respond in the way that they did?
“Those that laughed and cheered, how would you feel? Those that laughed and cheered, you should be ashamed of yourselves.”
Another Albion fan said he “couldn’t believe” that fans were being so “petty”.
He said: “I love everything he has done for us as a player and he played his heart out.
“We honestly don’t deserve a hard-working player like him if that’s how some fans are going to be.”
