A CHARITY has been accused of installing shutters to prevent homeless people sleeping in its porch.
Oxfam opened in St James’s Street, Brighton, taking from a former Starbucks.
The porch outside was a spot where rough sleepers would shelter from the elements.
But since Oxfam opened the shop, shutters were put in place over the front porch.
Some Argus readers criticised the decision, one said: “People are sheltering out of the worst of the weather, but Oxfam installs a shutter.
“That’s a good use of charity contributions, very charitable, very Christmas spirit.”
But Oxfam said: “All new Oxfam shops with a recessed doorway now have a shutter fitted for security reasons.
“Donations are often left out of hours and unfortunately have been stolen, damaged, and on occasion, set on fire.”
