A CAMPAIGNER has called for a newly-elected Tory MP to stand down over comments she made about disabled people.
Sally-Ann Hart, the Conservative MP for Hastings and Rye, was publicly condemned for saying some people with learning difficulties “don’t understand about money”.
She made the comments at a hustings in Hastings in the run up to last week’s General Election, before she became the town’s new MP.
She was defending an article suggesting that disabled people should be “allowed” to work for less than the national minimum wage.
But Martyn Ellacott 63, head of the Phoenix Disability help group in London, said her comments were “disgraceful” and amounted to discrimination.
He called The Argus to say he was prepared to come to Hastings and confront Ms Hart about her comments.
Mr Ellacott said: “I can’t believe she’s just been elected after causing all that grief.
“It’s disgraceful. I wouldn’t want someone representing me who’d said those things.”
Mr Ellacott is disabled himself and said he was hurt by the MP’s comments.
He said: “Singling out disabled people in that way is discrimination.
“She thinks that just because she’s a politician she can get away with it.
“I’m very upset. She should make a public apology.
“She’s not fit to run for office, and she should step down.”
“At present my disability is causing me too much grief.
“But if I could get down there I’d like to have a word with Sally Ann-Hart.
“I can’t understand why people voted for her, and I’m worried for disabled people, and I’m angry because this kind of thing is spreading.
“I often get abuse myself. That’s why I’m really upset with Sally-Ann Hart.
“I was born with a club foot and then suffered an accident at work. I’ve been teased a lot of my life.
“You can’t help being disabled. We shouldn’t be discriminated against by the people who are supposed to be representing us.
“All we ask for is equality.”
Ms Hart is now under investigation for alleged Islamophobia, just days after the Conservative Party opened an inquiry because Ms Hart liked a Nazi phrase on Facebook and shared an antisemitic slur.
Ms Hart did not respond to The Argus’s request for comment.
