FIRE crews are currently fighting a blaze in a derelict building.

The fire is raging near East Grinstead railway station and people have been warned to avoid the area.

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We're currently on scene at a fire in East Grinstead with East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service.

"The fire is in a derelict building near the railway station and six pumps are in attendance.

"It's rush hour, so the area can get quite busy. Please try and find an alternative route if possible."

As a result of the fire Maypole Road has been closed.

An AA spokesman said: "The road is closed due to a building fire in Maypole Road both ways from the A22 London Road to Park Road.

"Fire services are currently on scene working on the derelict building.

"There is queueing traffic and traffic is heavier than normal on the A22 London Road both ways at Maypole Road.

"This is due to the Maypole Road closure because of a building fire.

"It is affecting traffic travelling through East Grinstead."
