AN INDEPENDENT councillor has announce she will run for a hotly-contested seat in the next General Election.

Bridget Fishleigh, who represents Rottingdean Coastal residents on Brighton and Hove City Council, will run for the Brighton Kemptown seat.

She will compete against current Labour MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle.

Cllr Fishleigh said the seat needed an MP "free from party political dogma".

"We need MPs who are able to dedicate their time to problems that need solving– and not on exhaustive internal party affairs," she said.

"We need MPs who can take a pragmatic approach and do what's right for residents rather than having to tow the party line."

All major parties have announced their candidates for Brighton Kemptown.

Brighton and Hove mayor and South East MEP Alexandra Phillips is the Green candidate, while city councillor Joe Miller will represent the Conservatives.

The Brexit Party candidate has selected army veteran and intelligence professional Graham Cushway as candidate, while the Lib Dems have chosen Ben Thomas.
