THERE is disruption on a busy train line after a fault at a station.

A fault in the signalling system at Haywards Heath is causing trains travelling between Brighton and Gatwick Airport to be delayed and cancelled.

It is reported that queues of trains are forming around the station and disruption is expected to last until 8pm.

A Southern Rail spokesman said: "Due to a fault with the signalling system at Haywards Heath, all trains going through this station are subject to delays of up to 25 minutes.

"In addition to this, there is also a fault with the signalling system at Redhill.

"There will be no Thameslink trains calling at Redhill (in the London direction) until further notice.

"Please check customer information screens and journey planners for up to date service information.

"Trains may be cancelled or delayed."

The spokesman explained the signalling fault.

He said: "At 16:45 a problem was confirmed with the signalling system at Haywards Heath.

"Drivers of trains using platforms 1 and 2 are required to call the signaller so they can be manually talked past a particular set of signals, which is causing extra time to be added to the journey.

"Network Rail specialist engineers are due on site shortly and will work to fix the issue as soon as possible.

"Shortly after 18:00 we were advised of a problem with the signalling system at Redhill.

"This is only affecting Thameslink trains travelling towards London.

"Network Rail specialist engineers are also on their way to the site and will update us in due course."
