FIRE crews battled two blazes into the early hours.

Neighbours were warned to keep their windows closed and people were advised to avoid the area as the fires raged for hours.

The two fires were in Bedford Street and Longford Road, both in Bognor.

Sussex Police have now said the two incidents are both "suspected cases of arson" and have arrested a man.

A spokesman said: "Firefighters alerted police to a shed fire in Bedford Street just before 2am on Monday.

"At 3.22am another call was received to bins alight in Longford Road and there were fears that the fire had spread to a nearby shop.

"This was restricted to smoke damage but some other damage was caused while the fire was being extinguished.

"Anyone with information about either incident is asked to report online or call 101 quoting serial 120 of 28/10."

He added that a 39-year-old man from Bognor was arrested shortly after 5am on suspicion of arson.

He remained in custody at 2.30pm on Monday.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service attended both fires and battled them through the early hours, making the scene safe.
