THERE is a tough road ahead for fitness fanatics Luretta Spearing and John Sharkey once they tie the knot today.

The pair will also have a gruelling 16-mile run to contend with – because they plan to wed in the middle of a marathon.

The couple met through their mutual love of long distance running. They have been together for six years and have a three-year-old son.

They thought it would be fitting to say “I do” while doing what they enjoyed the most.

Luretta said: “We were engaged for over a year before a conversation one evening led us to question if it would be possible to get married mid marathon.

“I had already entered the Beachy Head Marathon as it is one of my favourite marathons, so we thought it would be a good choice.

“A few enquiries were made and three days later everything was booked.

“We wanted our wedding to be about us, and what better way than doing the thing we both love.”

The couple will marry in the village of Alfriston, 9.5 miles into the 26.2 mile course which will see them traverse a challenging off-road course of coast paths, forested areas and plenty of hills.

Today’s event is expected to attract some 3,000 runners, including many of Luretta and Jon’s friends.

Luretta said: “We thought we’d have a quiet wedding but many friends decided it would be fun to join us so we’re really excited to be celebrating with our closest family and friends.”

But crossing the finish line will not mean the pair, who are from Wimborne in Dorset, can finally relax.

Instead they will make a beeline for Bede’s school in Hailsham where their wedding reception will be held.

They will be able to celebrate the knackering nuptials with a slice of cake, a glass of bubbly and a well-earned sit down.
