Furry and feathered friends have been putting smiles on the faces of
elderly residents at a care home.
The Pet Pals Therapy service has visited Barford Court in Hove regularly this year, taking rabbits, chickens, cats and other well-behaved friendly pets along to say hello.
Staff say the visits have had a positive effect on the
health and wellbeing of the residents.
The benefits of spending time with animals for older people are immense.
Research has shown that having something to pet or touch can result in lower blood pressure, normal heart rate and reduced stress.
Pets provide emotional stability during stressful situations, helping to reduce anxiety and depression.
The visits have also proved to be wonderful for residents who have dementia as they help to spark conversation and reminiscence.
Gemma Wheelhouse, activities co-ordinator at the home in Kingsway, said: “The animal visits mean the world to our residents.
“They put a smile on everyone’s faces.
“The effect of these regular visits on our residents’ mental health and wellbeing is quite profound.
“In particular, for our residents with advanced dementia, we see a real transformation when the animals visit – they are so calming.”
Barford Court is run by RMBI Care Co, part of the Masonic Charitable Foundation.
