DRIVERS are complaining of a "meltdown" in an Aldi car park and are calling for the police to get involved.

People leaving Pavilion Retail Park, the site of the new superstore near Lewes Road, say they are facing waits of "hours" to get out of the car park.

One frustrated driver, who has been waiting in a queue for 30 minutes, said: "Meltdown in the Lewes Road Aldi car park now.

"No one going anywhere, needs police."

Another frustrated driver, who was also caught in the car park,  said: "Brighton and Hove City Council, your idea that the Aldi “excitement” on Lewes Road would calm and the car park become flowing traffic is providing hideously wrong.

"Stuck for hours with most cars running engines polluting what is already one of the city’s polluted areas."

The Aldi store opened in October, last year.

The supermarket’s move into the retail park is part of £6 million expansion plans first set out in 2016.

The store created 50 new jobs locally.

Aldi has been contacted for comment.
