Flight times are being advertised an hour late because a computer failed to recognise the clocks going back.

Arrival and departure times at Gatwick airport are being published incorrectly on Teletext, Ceefax, the Gatwick website and within the airport itself.

Not every flight is affected. Airport operator BAA said it was mainly domestic flights and some European flights.

Spokesman Stuart McDonald said staff were working hard to put the fault right as soon as possible.

He said: "It was noticed at 6am. They have been working on it all day."

Technicians are giving priority to the fixed screens inside the airport. The system was supposed to update itself when the switch to GMT took place at 2am but failed to do so.

Mr McDonald said: "It should have been automated. I have never heard of this before. It is certainly not a manual thing."

John Bray, of Rumbolds Lane, Haywards Heath, was due to meet his daughter and two grandchildren off a flight from Turin at lunchtime today.

Luckily he realised the arrival time was wrong and avoided setting off an hour late.

He said: "Hundreds of flights are wrong. It is going to cause such a lot of discomfort to people."
