SUSSEX is set to be hit by heavy rain and strong winds as the Met Office issued two weather warnings for the country.

Forecasters said this weekend will "feel more like autumn than August".

A weather warning for Saturday has been issued for wind to go along with the yellow weather warning for rain that was already in place.

The Met Office said about the wind on Saturday: "Unseasonably strong southwesterly winds are expected to cause some disruption.

"Gusts of 40-50mph are expected inland and to around 60mph around the coasts - particularly in association with heavy showers."

The wind warning adds to the rain warning that is forecasting a band of heavy rain bringing as much 30mm of rain in just a few hours.

The bad weather has seen a series of events cancelled, including Boardmasters music festival in Cornwall.

When will the rain and wind start to move in?

Heavy showers will spread from the west on Friday morning bringing the risk of hail and thunder.

Winds will strengthen on Friday afternoon with coastal gales developing. There will be a maximum temperature 23C.

Heavy, thundery showers will develop on Saturday with coastal and local inland gales.

Thee will be strong winds and spells of rain possible on Sunday.

It will be less windy Monday with sunny spells and further heavy showers.

Neil Armstrong, chief meteorologist at the Met Office said: “This low-pressure system will bring challenging conditions, including unseasonably strong winds and heavy rain, from the west during Friday and Saturday.

"Summer storms - compared with those in autumn and winter - always have the potential to create additional impacts because more people are likely to be outdoors, especially by the coast.

"Additionally with trees in full leaf they are more vulnerable to being brought down by strong winds."
