There are few things better in summer than a picnic with your friends and family, sitting in the sun with sandwiches and snacks. Tomorrow is the start of National Picnic Week and Jamie Walker has searched for some of country’s favourite picnic foods and the county’s best picnic hotspots.

SUSSEX’s best picnic spots:

Brighton beach

Of course the beach is a natural place for a picnic.

But it’s not just Brighton that has a glorious strip of sea. There are brilliant beaches in Worthing, Hastings, Eastbourne and along the rest of the South Coast.

But don’t leave your food unguarded or it will be at the mercy of the seagulls.

Hove Lawns

Hove Lawns are normally filled with people kicking around a football, flying kites or just relaxing on the grass.

If you can find a nice quiet spot it’s a lovely place to chill out with a sandwich and drink.

Kipling Gardens

The Green, Rottingdean

The gardens are named after the writer who lived there between 1897 and 1902.

It was in this house, which was then known as The Elm, that he wrote Stalky and Co, Kim and some of the works that comprised the Just So Stories.

If you want to take in the beauty of the gardens and maybe draw some inspiration for your own writing, then this is a perfect spot.

Southover Grange Gardens

Southover Road, Lewes

This area has been described by some as the “hidden gem of Lewes” and it is easy to see why.

The grounds are beautiful and a perfect place to take the family, especially in the summer.

There are two gardens on the site, separated by the scenic Winterbourne stream.

It’s a great place to see nature at its best.

Sheffield Park

Uckfield

Another great park and garden where you can enjoy nature and watch the world go by, perhaps while sitting on a blanket with a glass of wine or a beer.

South Downs National Park

Hassocks

With nearly 2,000 km of amazing views across the county, the South Downs National Park is one of the most popular tourist spots in Sussex.

When you’re done picnicking you can enjoy a walk across the hillsides or cycle to your heart’s content.

Fountains at the De La Warr Pavilion

Marina, Bexhill

The De La Warr Pavilion is one of the most picturesque venues in Sussex.

You don’t have to be visiting for a gig in order to enjoy the surroundings.

The lawns in front of the building are a great place to take in the views out over the sea.

Farley Farm House

Muddles Green, Chiddingly

If you are an art lover then this is a spot you need to investigate.

The layout of the garden was designed by artist and historian Roland Penrose, who moved to Farley in 1949.

It became a hub for artists including the likes of Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst and Joan Miro who used to visit frequently.

If you want to picnic in an area where famous artists have spent their afternoons then this is the place to be.
