WHEN most people walk into the supermarket, they walk out with a bag full of groceries.
But Peacehaven resident Dan Spencer walked out of Morrisons with a Guinness World Record on Saturday.
The 33-year-old is now officially “the person to spin a cushion on his finger for the longest”.
In front of his proud wife and bemused shoppers, the Morrisons worker managed to spin a the soft furnishing on his finger for a total of 18 minutes and 14 seconds.
The time, recorded at the supermarket in St James’s Street, Brighton, is more than three minutes longer than the previous record.
A triumphant Dan beamed: “I feel good, very proud of myself, proud of all my friends and family who have come to support me.
“I came to the decision this year that I wanted a Guinness World Record so I had a look and there was already a record for doing this.
“I decided to give it a go and now, I’m the best in the world at something.”
The previous record holder span the cushion for 15 minutes and seven seconds.
Dan, who used the event to raise money for the Guide Dogs charity, said his triumph was a long time in the making.
“I started doing it when I was about ten years old when I was watching the telly with my mum,” he said. “I would sit there and spin a pillow in the front room and it drove her mad.
“Now I’ve been practising in the evenings and it drives my wife just as crazy as it did my mum.”
Dan said his wife, Hayley, was the person behind the scenes and put everything together.
Hayley explained that the record attempt must have evidence to be confirmed.
This proof includes witness statements, a video, and multiple time keepers.
She said: “I’m really happy for him, very pleased.
“It was really good seeing him achieve this and it made all those times I was hit in the face with a cushion worthwhile.”
This record is not the first to broken in the city.
Last year, Brighton bartender Francois Monin smashed a beer opening world record.
The bar manager at Lucky Voice in Black Lion Street, beat the record for opening the most crown cap beer bottles in one minute with a total of 107.
He also holds another record, after opening 2,000 beer bottles in 23 minutes, 55 seconds on Brighton beach back in August 2014.
