Hi Suzi, how is everything going?

Oh I’m busy as hell but I love my job so I’m not complaining.

You did the Legends Live tour in 2017 with David as well. What made you want to do it again?

Last time out was fantastic, we had a great time.

The show was successful and as much as I like doing my own show it’s fun being on with some different acts, it’s great.

Is there quite a nostalgic feel about it?

Yeah, I do kind of stand at the side of the stage and watch everybody else perform.

As well as David Essex, you’ll be joined by Bay City Rollers and Showaddywaddy.

It’s quite an eclectic mix.

David I’ve known for a long time, he’s brilliant. I know Les McKeown of Bay City Rollers very well, they were huge and Showaddywaddy I’ve known for ever.

We’ve all worked together through the years many times and it will be a good show.

And it says a lot you’ve all enjoyed such longevity.

I can only speak for me, I don’t follow everybody else’s things.

But I’m constantly out on the road touring.

I work everywhere.

I can’t speak for how much touring the other guys do across the world.

But good music lasts.

The good stuff stands the test of time.

Your tour schedule does seem packed. What do you love about being on the road so much?

Well I was born to entertain, that’s how it is.

I said to my husband the other day after a gig that I felt like myself once I got back in the dressing room.

I’m happy when I’m creating a new song or I’m on stage.

I’m an old fashioned entertainer, I can’t change that. I’ve had 54 years in the business and I still love it.

I always have that same sense of wanting to entertain.

If I ever go out with a phoney smile that’s the day I’ll stop.

So you’ve not thought of slowing down at all?

No, the answer is no.

I think that when the time comes for me to stop I’ll know it.

I’m running around the stage and come off not even out of breath so that says it all.

I’m just pleased to be doing my job.

What can people expect from the Legends Live tour?

Well this tour won’t be exactly the same as the tour two years ago.

You do the hits of course but I try and mix it up a bit.

Everyone will be entertained.

Aside from the big hits, are there any songs you particular love playing live?

I do loads of songs that I love doing.

There’s so many tracks that are such nice stage songs and so much fun to play.

I love, at the end of the show, doing a ballad with just the piano.

Everyone knows me for my rock but I like a bit of light and shade.

And what is David Essex like to work with?

I’ve known David a long time he’s a lovely man.

He still has that twinkle in his eye, he always will.

I said to someone a while ago that I used to fancy him and they replied “who didn’t?”.

He’s aged really well but he’s also just a really nice man.

And some would say you’ve had more success over here in the UK than maybe back in America. What do you like about playing these British crowds?

I’m a household name in America from Happy Days and I toured there all the time.

But I never did as many shows all together because I was based over here, so I tended to tour this area a lot more.

It just worked out that way.

I’ve been here a long time now but I’m still the girl from Detroit.

You’ve done so much acting and radio work too. What made you want to branch out into so many mediums?

The only way to explain it is that I’m an artiste.

I’m a broadcaster, entertainer, singer, actor, writer.

I’m just a creative girl.

I’m not greedy, I just want to try everything that this ball that is entertainment will let me do.

If someone said you could only do one which would it be?

My initial reaction is to say it would be performing on stage I love doing that, but I love doing everything else too.

You were one of the first big female names in rock. Do you look back and see how many artists you’ve influenced over that time?

Oh gosh there’s tonnes.

Basically all the girls that have come since me.

Sure, there have been other musicians, but nobody had success as a female rock musician before me.

All the girls I’ve met, be they my age or younger, have come to me and thanked me.

It’s nice to know that once you kick down the door other people will come through it.

So why is this going to be the show to see?

People should come and see this because you never know how much longer you’ll be able to see these acts for.

It’s going to be a good show.

Legends Live takes place at the Brighton Centre tomorrow.
