Now Sussex Police have said they believe it was an arson attack.
Detective Constable Adam Tidy said: ““Fortunately the owners of the formerly renovated property were not present at the time and no one was hurt in the fire.
“But there was a considerable amount of damage to the property that is now beyond repair.”
Police are now urging witnesses of the fire to contact them.
DC Tidy said: “Anyone who may have seen suspicious behaviour in this area at this time or who has information on the fire to get in contact with us.”
