A BALCONY collapsed in a city street causing a road to be closed.

Police and fire services rushed to Denmark Terrace in Brighton yesterday evening after a house’s balcony came “adrift”. The road was shut as the area was “made safe”.

Brighton and Hove Police posted a video of the scene on social media at about 10pm showing a police car and fire engine attending the scene.

It said: “Just at a road closure in Denmark Terrace following a request from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) to support them whilst they make the side of a building safe following reports of a balcony being adrift.

“We’ll update when reopened.”

At about 11pm, Brighton and Hove Police posted a second Tweet.

It said: “Denmark Terrace has now been reopened. Thankfully no-one was injured during this incident.”

Tom Druitt, councillor for the Regency Ward in which the incident happened, visited the area following the collapse.

He said: “On my way to Denmark Terrace to check residents are ok following a balcony collapse.

“Hats off to Sussex Police and ESFRS teams on the ground making it safe.”

In 2016 The Argus reported on a balcony collapse in nearby Montpelier Road.

Four people were stood on the balcony of the mid-19 century building when it fell through.

Three of the people fell two storeys and all four were taken to hospital.

A 25-year old Brighton man, a 32-year old London woman and a 30-year-old woman, also from London, all had leg injuries while a 30-year-old London man with an arm injury had been discharged from hospital.

The incident happened at an Airbnb property.

At the time, a Brighton and Hove City Council spokesman said it was similar to other historic properties across the city.

They said that owners were advised to review the condition of their balconies and renters should check with owner on the appropriate use of them.
