AN investigation has revealed a list of the homeless people who have died while sleeping rough or in emergency accomodation in Brighton and Hove over the past 18 months. 

The 24 deaths – not a complete total of those who have lost their lives – provides a snapshot into the bleak prospects facing those living on the streets.

Here's what we know about those who lost their lives:

2019

  • February 1, anonymous, 55-year-old man. No other information is known.
  • January 29, anonymous man. He was found in his emergency accommodation room.

2018

  • December 24, anonymous, 60-year-old man. He died in hospital and was living in an Emmaus in Brighton.
  • November 11, anonymous, 56-year-old man. He was found dead in his homeless hostel room.
  • November, anonymous, 53-year-old man. He had severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and was living in a homeless hostel.
  • October 5, anonymous, 54-year-old man. He had recently moved into a homeless hostel from unsupported emergency accommodation.
  • September 31, Jake Humm, 22. He was an aspiring rapper who was staying in a YMCA hostel he took his own life.
  • September 10, Andrew O’Connell, 54. He was described as a “free spirit” and died after being attacked near the Royal Pavilion.
  • August 16, anonymous, 52-year-old woman. She was living in unsupported emergency accommodation when she died.
  • July 7, “CB”, 36-year-old man. He was in emergency accommodation when he died.
  • July 1, anonymous, 46-year-old man. He was recently homeless and died in a support hostel for people with mental health problems.
  • April 11, Arna Bud-Husain, 49. She was a resident at a homeless hostel.
  • April 4, William Morrow, 45. He was a rough sleeper of 15 years who died of a heroin overdose, despite have recently detoxed.
  • April, anonymous, 45-year-old man. Cause of death unknown.
  • April, anonymous man in his fifties. Cause of death unknown.
  • January 1, anonymous, 55-year-old man. He had been living in long-term, temporary accommodation.

2017

  • December, anonymous, 35-year-old woman. She died in hospital after living on the streets.
  • November, anonymous, 43-year-old man. He died of a suspected drug overdose the day after he was evicted from emergency accommodation.
  • November, anonymous, 41-year-old woman. She had been in emergency accommodation but had just found a more permanent room. Suspected cause of death was complications caused by alcohol.
  • November, anonymous, 34-year-old man died of sepsis.
  • October 29, Robert Bartlett, 30. He was sleeping rough and died of a suspected overdose.
  • October, anonymous, 60-year-old man died while in long-term temporary accommodation.
  • October, anonymous, 39-year-old man. No other information is known.
