A LABOUR MP has thrown his support behind pledges to Jewish members of the party to prevent anti-Semitism.

Hove MP Peter Kyle is one of 103 Labour Party members to have put their name to an open letter addressed to the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM).

The letter urges members of the group not to leave the party and apologises for letting its Jewish supporters down.

It states: “As Labour Party members of Parliament we know Labour has let our Jewish supporters and members down by failing to eradicate the anti-Semitism within our ranks.

“Each of us recognises the leadership role we must play in addressing the toxic racism, calling out those who seek to make solidarity with our Jewish comrades a test of foreign policy and proudly standing with them in saying and acting to ensure anti-Semitism has no place in the Labour movement at any level.”

“We know words mean little when not backed by deeds.

“Therefore, each of us pledge the following...”

The MPs made four pledges to the JLM which aim to prevent future anti-Semitic behaviour.

They include joining the JLM and encouraging other party members to do the same.

It also said they would organise JLM’s anti-Semitism training for party members and distribute its material, speak out against anti-Semitism “wherever it is expressed without fear or favour” and to recognise JLM as the “legitimate and long-standing representative of Jews in the Labour Party”.

Peter Kyle said: “At a time when the Jewish community feels besieged by rising anti-Semitism and alienated by large parts of our political institutions, it falls to community leaders and politicians to recommit ourselves to the historic fight against hatred, racism and bigotry.

“I do so in a heartbeat.”

Brighton Kemptown MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle was not on the list.

He has been approached for comment.

The JLM was established in 1903 and is a group of Labour supporting members of the Jewish Community.

In 1920, it became a formal affiliate of the Labour Party.

On its website, it says its values include working for democratic socialism in the UK and Israel, maintaining the Jewish identity and supporting the rights of Jews everywhere to lead full lives as equal citizens.
