A SUSSEX brewery has been sold to an international business as part of a nine-figure deal.

Dark Star Brewery is being sold to Japanese company Asahi as part of a £250 million deal with the Horsham-based brewery’s owner, London-based brewery Fuller’s.

Dark Star Brewery’s managing director James Cuthbertson, 44, said: “We are coming up to a year under Fullers’ ownership.

“The Asahi deal is new so we will wait and see what it means for us.”

Under the deal, Fuller’s will sell the production and distribution of its ales to the European arm of the Japanese brewer.

Mr Cuthbertson said: “We have just signed a new lease for ten years and recently put a new canning system so we have received investment from Fuller’s and there is momentum is with us.

“I expect Asahi to be an exciting new chapter in our life.”

Dark Star Brewery was started in 1994 in the basement of a Brighton pub.

It later moved out of its Brighton cellar after increasing demand for its beers and is now based in Partridge Green, near Horsham, and has a 45 barrel brewhouse.
