A CAR and motorcyle crashed on the A259 causing severe delays this evening.

The accident happened at 4.23pm at the junction between Cranleigh Avenue and Marine Drive, near Saltdean.

One driver stuck in the traffic said that cars were queuing eastbound beyond Brighton Marina, and many are choosing to turn around at the Brighton Marina turning.

Police are on the scene.

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: "It was a motorcyclist versus car.

"The motorcyclist had some injuries and has been taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital.

"The driver of the car was uninjured.

"The road was completely blocked at 4.40pm.

"The vehicles have now been cleared off the road but traffic is still slow."

The AA website said: "Congestion to Rottingdean for eastbound traffic. Traffic taking turns to pass the scene of the collision.

"Delays of seven minutes and delays easing on Marine Drive Eastbound in Saltdean. Average speed five mph."

Brighton and Hove Buses services are also being disrupted.

On social media, a spokesman said: "Due to the accident on the A259 coast road, our BH27 services currently cannot serve Saltdean and are being turned at Rottingdean.

"WESTBOUND #BH12, #BH12A, #BH12X, #BH14 and #BH14C's are operating via the A26 / A27 direct to the Sealife Centre."
