A FOOTBALL supporter has been charged with shouting homophobic abuse at a match.
George Bradley was sat in the away end among Chelsea supporters for the team’s visit to Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.
The 20-year-old was arrested at the American Express Community Stadium for his behaviour.
Police said the vast majority of Chelsea fans supported their team, but said Bradley was ejected from the stand after stewards dealt with the alleged homophobia.
He was charged with using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.
The news follows a report received by British Transport Police that three Chelsea fans were spoken to after alleged anti-semitic chants on board a train from Falmer to Brighton after Sunday’s game.
It causes further embarrassment to Chelsea, following reports of fans singing anti-semitic songs at an away match in the Europa League against Vidi in Hungary.
More than 1,200 fans travelled there, and some chanted an anti-Tottenham Hotspur song which references “Yids”.
Article 14 of Uefa’s regulations state that clubs face a partial closure of their home stadium if supporters are found guilty of behaviour that “insults the human dignity of a person or group of person on whatever grounds, including skin colour, race, religion, or ethnic origin”.
The chant took place in the opening three minutes of the Europa League game, and was just days after four Chelsea supporters were suspended for alleged racist chants towards Manchester City player Raheem Sterling at Stamford Bridge.
Now door-to-door salesman Bradley, of Dabin Crescent in Greenwich, will appear before Brighton Magistrates’ Court to face the charge on January 3. He was told not to attend any Chelsea matches before the hearing.
Sussex Police said: "The vast majority of Chelsea fans supported their team with passion and pride and were a credit to their club.
"One individual was ejected from the away section after club stewards dealt with an isolated incident of alleged homophobia.
"The individual was subsequently arrested and charged and his details have been passed to Chelsea FC, so they can take the appropriate action."
