ONE of the longest-established “new vinyl” shops is back in action after being forced to move due to building redevelopment.
Cult Hero has reopened in Brighton Place after moving from North Street, Brighton.
Owner Frank Taylor, 35, moved out of his old shop at the end of April after the landlord sold the premises for the Hanningtons Lane redevelopment.
Frank said he loves his new home.
He said: “It’s a much nicer shop. It’s quieter and customers can listen to the music.
“I was in North Street for ten years or so. There was a lot of hustle and bustle and I enjoyed that but customers also want to enjoy music while looking at vinyl, they like to take their time.
“The shop space is much bigger. It used to be a hairdressers and I renovated the shop myself.
“I have added more art and paintings. I want to make the shop more attractive and different for customers.
“We are going to display loads of local artists’ work and it will be like an art gallery.”
Frank has been working in the music retail industry since he was 21.
He admitted it had been tough for him in the first few years as a novice store manager.
However, with hard work and perseverance, Cult Hero became one of most popular and successful vinyl record shops in the city.
Frank said: “I am the longest seller of new vinyl in Brighton. I just love music so much and Brighton is the perfect music scene.
“I am used to the competition. We always had it so it’s nothing new.
“To draw customers, you need to make the shop look clean and attractive.”
Frank said the “vinyl revolution” has influenced the younger generation to start collecting records.
He said: “There’s a lot of demand for vinyl and we have customers from different age groups.
“Vinyl doesn’t go out of date because people enjoy collecting it.
“If you are, say 30, you didn’t grow up listening to vinyl but once you get interested you want to have a collection.
“Vinyl is good quality and it doesn’t lose value.
“It’s like hardback book covers. We keep thinking they’re bygones but people still buy them.
“As a vinyl seller, you need to make sure you know your music and what people are looking for.
“I have plans to start selling second hand records.
“I absolutely love what I do and I enjoy sharing my interests with customers.”
