A 25-year-old is to appear in court charged with the brutal killing of a man in his bed.
Benjamin Frankum, from Littlehampton, is accused of repeatedly stabbing Daniel Quelch and leaving him to die.
Mr Quelch's body was discovered lying in his mother's home in Maidenhead, Berkshire, on Thursday morning.
He had been stabbed a number of times and had his throat cut.
Yesterday Frankum, of Arundel Road, Littlehampton, appeared at Slough Magistrates' Court charged with the murder of the 33-year-old.
He stood in the dock looking pale and flanked by two security guards as he heard details of the charge against him.
The court was told police were called after Barbara Quelch arrived home to find a man on her driveway.
Officers who responded to the 999 call found Mr Quelch's bloodied body inside the house.
Prosecutor Tony Baldwin told the court Mr Quelch's mother had gone out just before her son was attacked.
He said: "The mother of the victim left her home in Maidenhead and she left her home without disturbing her 33-year-old son.
"There were three young children in the house, all under the age of 12."
Mr Baldwin explained that Mrs Quelch left her home at 5.45am and arrived back at 7.10am the same morning, when she saw a man in her kitchen.
She called the police from her driveway and the defendant was arrested less than 20 minutes later near the home in Cherry Garden Lane, in the Littlewick Green area of the town.
Mr Baldwin told the court that the victim, who is from Reading, did not live at that address.
He said: "The victim was there by chance. He was staying overnight."
Mr Baldwin added there was some concern the three children may have witnessed Mr Quelch's death.
Caroline Dunne, defending, said there was no indication of a plea to the charge and did not make an application for bail.
District Judge Andrew Vickers remanded Frankum in custody saying: "The allegation against you can only be heard in a crown court."
He ordered Frankum to reappear at Reading Crown Court on September 3.
Windsor and Maidenhead police commander Superintendent Mike Ismay reassured residents of the town that it was an isolated incident and said officers were not currently looking for anyone else in relation to the inquiry.
Anyone with information about the killing is asked to call 0845 8505505 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
