SUPERSTAR Fatboy Slim insists “nothing beats playing to a home crowd” after his exclusive gig on the i360.
The DJ has recently been performing for thousands at festivals in Belgium and Romania, but returned to his “home town” of Brighton on Monday to play to an intimate crowd of 120 – plus about 1.2 million who tuned in to a Facebook livestream.
Despite the huge online audience, 54-year-old Fatboy, real name Norman Cook, said he was doing it for the lucky ones in the i360 pod on Brighton seafront.
He told The Argus: “I was absolutely booming – for three years I have wanted to do this.
“Nothing beats playing to a really warm home town crowd.
“It feels nicer to do something like that, especially doing something different in Brighton.
“The level of excitement, love and pride is upped, rather than like another festival.
“Playing to your local crowd, what’s not to love?
“There was love in that pod.
“In my view, I was playing to the people in the pod.”
Tickets sold out within minutes, and those fortunate enough to get their hands on one certainly enjoyed the moment.
Fatboy, originally from Bromley, Kent, played two 40-minute sets 450ft in the air, with the pod coming down for a 15-minute comfort break in between as the DJ carried on blasting out the tunes.
After the years of anticipation for his performance on the i360, Fatboy said he began getting worried, particularly when it seemed like the pod might not make it up due to the number of people on one side.
He said: “Even when we were waiting to go up (in the pod) I thought something was going to go wrong.
“When you’ve waited to do something you think there are going to be problems.
“I thought we might get stuck all night – I was prepared for that.”
