HEARTFELT tributes have been paid to a rugby player who died after competing in his club’s final game of the season.
Steyning RFC player Jonathan Harley, who lived in the town, was treated by medics before being taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton on Saturday afternoon following the match against Worthing Knights.
Hundreds of social media users have paid tribute to the 27-year-old support worker, who was known to many of his friends and teammates as PJ.
In a post on the club's website, a spokesman wrote: “Our thoughts are with his family and friends. The irony and sadness of his passing on the last day of our first season as Steyning Rugby Club isn’t lost upon us.
“PJ had a huge part to play in the resurgence of rugby (from Norfolk Arms to Steyning RFC) in our town and will be sorely missed by us all… we few, we lucky few, we band of brothers that got to play alongside him.
“Swing low sweet chariot and carry him home.”
In a Facebook post, Tracey Beazley wrote: “He was such a lovely young man, genuine to the core.
“He was a huge part of the rugby community and will be sorely missed by SRFC and the Norfolk Arms.
“Condolences go out to Matt, Adam and their family. RIP PJ xxx.”
Kyle Grindell wrote: “An absolute gentleman who always had a smile on his face. Always in our memory forever in our hearts. Thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.”
Worthing player Andy Brown said: “Having played for Worthing in the game yesterday, the family, friends and team mates of PJ have been at the forefront of my mind all day.
“Deepest condolences from me and everyone at Worthing RFC. RIP rugby brother.”
Mr Harley was taken to the hospital after the match kicked off at 3pm, where he died within hours of playing.
The right-winger made 13 appearances for the club, scoring four tries and a total of 20 points.
