An OUTRAGED customer has accused Superdrug of being ‘racist’ for putting CCTV stickers on shelves with hair products sold to black and Asian communities.

Xavy Wright, in her late 20s, of Brighton, visited the store at Brighton train station on Sunday to buy hair products.

She saw there were two yellow warning signs stuck on the shelves of hair products for black and Asian communities.

Ms Wright said other shelves did not have these labels. She took her complaint to Facebook where she posted a video of the shelf to the company and accused it of being ‘racist’ and ‘rude’.

She posted: “Saw this at your Brighton store at the train station. I think it’s just rude and quite racist if I’m honest.”

She told The Argus: “There were two warning stickers saying there are CCTV in this particular area of the store.

“I couldn’t find stickers in the other aisles. The shelves are small, I think it’s less than a metre wide so I don’t think it was necessary to put CCTV there.

“The shelves are near the door and staff members are watching there.

“It’s just outrageous and it’s just so wrong to target a particular group and stereotyping them.

“People said on Facebook that because of the colour of their skin they have been targeted by staff members when they go shopping.

“I didn’t question staff members at the time because they were just following orders.”

Since Ms Wright put in the complaint, Superdrug issued an apology and has removed the stickers.

A spokeswoman for Superdrug said: “We’ve reviewed our CCTV footage from last Sunday and from this we can see the CCTV security signs in multiple locations around the Brighton Station store in line with our company policy.

“We will conduct a full review of all CCTV activity and will contact the customer to identify the time of her visit to the store.

“We apologise for any offence this has caused this was certainly never our intention.

“Superdrug prides itself on the diversity of its customers and colleagues and a lot of work has been done over the last few years to ensure we provide a wide range of products for all our customers.

“There are CCTV cameras and signs placed throughout Superdrug stores to prevent theft and to ensure the safety and security of our customers and colleagues.”
