SKATERS young and old were out in force at the weekend to test their skills on the ice.

The popular Royal Pavilion rink in Brighton officially began regular sessions throughout the day on Saturday, despite rain and heavy cloud.

The outdoor venue, which is now in its eighth year, will be open until January 14.

The first session on Saturday was held in aid of The Argus Appeal, which supports good causes across Sussex.

Shella Parkin, managing director of the rink’s creator Laine Ltd, said: “This is our Christmas present to the Argus Appeal.

“It is celebrating its 60th year of supporting local charities and won The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service this year.

“We are delighted to be able to contribute to their work by contributing all proceeds from the session to the appeal.

“It’s a fantastic way to start the season, despite this morning’s weather.”

Among those preparing to try out the venue at Saturday lunchtime was Alice Parker, 42, from Brighton, with her daughter Emma, ten.

She said: “I’ve heard about the rink before but we’ve never had the chance to try it out.

“Emma really wanted to come along and have a go so here we are.

“It is a great idea although I’m a bit nervous as neither of us is very skilled.”

Darren Edwards, 22, from Woodingdean, Brighton, said: “It would be great to have a permanent rink in Brighton but this is a great alternative.

“It’s nice being outside as well.”

A VIP opening of the rink on Thursday featured British figure skating champions Zoe Jones and Christopher Boyadji.

The main rink measures 880 square metres and there is a separate 130 square metre beginners’ rink with skating aids for learners.

There is also a bar and kitchen with a terrace next to the ice. Inside there is a 130-seat restaurant with a bar stocked with craft beers, 14 gins and mulled wine and cider.

Tickets cost from £10 for those aged 12 and over and £7 for juniors and family tickets are also available.

Entrance is for one-hour sessions which run from 10am to 9.15pm daily.
