A SEAFRONT has been given a massive boost with the second phase of a community bench – but with a difference.

Called The Shoal, the functional artwork has been the centre of attention at Splash Point in Seaford.

Now five new mackerel benches have been added to the sculpture.

The fish – swimming towards the sea – are linked together by “stream” benches.

Get up close and you can see hundreds of stainless steel fish swimming in the “stream”.

Each fish has a touching message of joy, celebration or remembrance.

Seaford mayor Linda Wallraven said: “The Shoal has been incredibly popular with local residents since Seaford Town Council took over from the Community Partnership who did a great job of creating the Pier Project.

“The personalised fish o n the seat have sold very quickly with just over 100 now remaining for the final section.

“The quality of the sculpture is stunning thanks to the expert craftsmanship and inspiration of the local artists who have designed and made it – Christian Funnell and Gabby Tofts.’

Each fish plaque has been sponsored by individuals and organisations with a love of Seaford.

Sponsors include visitors from around the world, extending all the way to Australia.

The project is self-funded by the purchase of different sizes of fish plaques .

Keith Blackburn, director of Seaford Community Partnership, said: “I am delighted to see the second phase of The Shoal project reaching completion.

“This was a key project from the consultation which was carried out by the Community Partnership several years ago.”
