POLICE have named the woman murdered in a "quiet" street yesterday morning.

Jillian Howell, 46, was found with multiple stab wounds at her home in Sandgate Road near Fiveways, Brighton at 6.30am.

Her family have released a statement in tribute to her, saying: "Jill was a kind, gentle and loving sister, aunty and friend. We are shocked and heartbroken by her loss.

"She touched many lives in her volunteer work with the Samaritans and was always helping others. She loved to travel and was a passionate Albion fan and season ticket holder. She lived life to the fullest and was dearly loved by her friends and family."

They have asked to be left to grieve in private.

Police are continuing to hold a 51-year-old Seaford man in custody on suspicion of Ms Howell's murder after he tried to hand himself in at John Street police station shortly after 6am yesterday. The front desk was closed, and he called officers and directed them to the address where the woman was found.

The man knew Ms Howell, but they were not related.

Scenes of crime officers were seen scouring the area for evidence yesterday as the road was cordoned off.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Police are continuing to hold a 51-year-old Seaford man arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman's body was found at her home in Sandgate Road, Brighton, on Thursday morning.
