WHEN an MP talks about her seat, she is usually referring to the Parliamentary constituency she represents.

But when Maria Caulfield, Conservative MP for Lewes, made a presentation to a charity exhibition on Friday she was referring to a seat of a more personal nature.

The decorated toilet seat she presented to the exhibition at Chandler’s Bathrooms showroom in Davey’s Lane, Lewes, featured a collage of pictures representing her role as an MP.

She used images of political life in London and from her Lewes constituency to show the balance of her work between Sussex and Westminster.

She called her piece “The Seat of Lewes”.

The lid features pictures of a suffragette re-enactment, photographs of the chamber of the House of Commons and of Westminster Hall and on the seat are photographs of the South Downs and the cliffs of the Sussex coast.

Ms Caulfield said: “It was great to see what the other artists had done with their toilet seats, they all looked so wonderful.”

“It is fantastic that Chandlers Bathrooms are making such an effort to raise funds for Headway East Sussex who do an amazing job for those with brain injuries.”

The exhibition opened on October 10 and the 22 pieces, created by artists, children, and Chandlers’ staff as well as the MP, are in a silent auction to raise money for Lewes brain injury charity Headway.

Simon Hind, showroom manager at Chandlers, said “The response from people has been superb, they’ve absolutely loved it.

“We’ve got a Game of Thrones style seat, it’s like a dragon egg it’s amazing, we’ve got a Lewes Bonfire scene, we’ve got Animals of Farthing Wood.

“They’re being auctioned off on Facebook and in the shop.

“Whoever places the highest bid wins the seat.

“We’ve got one at the moment which has reached £100.”

The auction finishes at midnight on Tuesday, October 31, and Mr Hind said the team was well on its way to meeting the target of £500.
